Amidst the evolving wildfire situation across Canada, our hearts are with the communities affected by these events. To provide support, the PetSmart Charities of Canada team is continuing to monitor the active wildfire situations unfolding across the country, and connect with local organizations helping pets and people in affected areas. We have already granted $111,927 to support wildfire relief efforts across Canada this year, but the need continues.

We are now accepting Disaster Relief grant applications from animal welfare and human service organizations that are Canadian registered charities, municipalities, or Indigenous communities, with pet-focused programming and are impacted by the wildfires in the affected regions. Organizations can apply through the PetSmart Charities of Canada Disaster Response Grant Portal.

We do this work together for pets like Duluth.

When the fires ripped through the Los Angeles area, her family lost everything. But thanks to our community partners there, Duluth and her family were able to move out of harm’s way and receive they care they needed.

Pets are family and when times are tough, we need their companionship more than ever. When disasters wreak havoc — like the wildfires and tornadoes that impacted multiple cities and states across the U.S. with the largest wildfires in California history happening only weeks ago in Southern California. Or the devastation of hurricanes like Helene and Milton, and floods— it’s critical to make provisions for our pets’ care, too. After all, they save us every day.

Many of us won’t forget Hurricanes Helene and Milton and their swift succession in the fall. Both exacted death, destruction and displacement. Millions of people and their pets were impacted, with an estimated cost of $250 billion across the southeast region.

We’ve all seen the footage of people that can’t bear to flee from fire or floodwaters without taking their precious companions. We understand, and we know pet lovers do, too. It’s why the PetSmart Charities Disaster Relief program makes grants available quickly to animal welfare partners and human service agencies that have pet-focused programs, because help can’t wait.

In 2024, PetSmart Charities awarded more than $1M in animal welfare grants for disaster relief. With your help, pets and people found safety and solace together.

Small change, big impact

You can imagine the chaos, fear and anxiety when natural disasters disrupt the hum of everyday life. Caring for animals is a busy job on any given day – much less when services such as power, water and/or communications are decimated. That’s what happened at Asheville Humane in North Carolina. Given that hurricanes tend to strike coastal regions, the magnitude was unforeseen. And punishing. When crises such as these strike, disaster response programs for pets make an immediate impact.

In an interview with Triple Pundit, Jennifer Walters, Interim Executive Director at Asheville Humane gave some insight into what it’s like for teams at animal shelters to cope. When Hurricane Helene struck, there was no time to waste as so much of the property was destroyed or flooded. They needed to get the animals out, quickly. In record time, their team coordinated the transportation of 100 pets to shelters in unaffected states with capacity, and nearly all were adopted quickly.

Within hours of Hurricane Helene and a week later, Hurricane Milton making landfall, PetSmart Charities made emergency grants for animal shelters and animal welfare and human service organizations with pet programs. In the days to follow, cash grants totaling more than $600K were sent to communities in North and South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee and Georgia. These grants supported pet lodging and medical needs, and also helped families with pets in their communities. Pet food is oftentimes a community need during disasters. PetSmart Charities heeded that call sending over $125K worth of pet food to North Carolina and to our Feeding America food bank partner, Feeding Tampa Bay in Florida.

As one of those grantees, Asheville Humane used the $25,000 grant to distribute pet food and supplies, creating a buffer for pet parents under financial distress from having to relinquish or rehome their precious pets, Jennifer said. And when people are coping with unimaginable stress, fur babies give the kind of unconditional love, support and stability that also helps families to move ahead.

After the news cycle faded, our friends at Asheville Humane kept going, making slow progress day by day like so many of our shelter partners. It took them weeks to have water and electricity restored. And the funds they received from PetSmart Charities helped provide for immediate needs and others as they recovered.

American Red Cross + PetSmart Charities = A Winning Partnership for Pets and People

No one organization can tackle disaster response alone. In 2022 PetSmart Charities and the American Red Cross forged a groundbreaking partnership to ensure pets were counted as members of the family. With a 3-year pledge of more than $2 million to the Red Cross’ Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP), the funding supports the infrastructure, capacity and programming for pets to be accounted for in disaster planning, response and recovery.

Now, with support from PetSmart Charities Red Cross pet-friendly disaster shelters ensure people and pets can find refuge, food and comfort together. And that brings us back to sweet Duluth. She was wheezing, and her family worried she was suffering from smoke inhalation after the fire. A Red Cross Pet Liaison —a role created because of our partnership— worked with her family to coordinate care from our partners at American Humane. They uncovered an upper respiratory infection, and Duluth got the care and medication she needed to heal.

In 2024, support from PetSmart Charities enabled the Red Cross to deploy 14 Pet Liaisons, open 308 shelters with Disaster Relief Operations, and provide 248,960 client/14,842 overnight pet stays, including nearly 6,000 overnight stays for pets with their families in shelters across five states in the aftermath of Helene and Milton.

These efforts are among many executed by a coalition of social and animal serving organizations that jump in to help with communication and coordination on a macro level.

We’re grateful so many people have dedicated their lives to the cause of natural disaster support for pets.

When the storms recede, everyone in the community, region and nation can pay it forward with just a little effort all year long:

Adopt or foster pets from your local shelter. Opening your home to a pet in need helps alleviate crowding on strained resources at your local shelter while adding love to your home.
Donate: PetSmart Charities and other national funders commit substantial grants to aid animal welfare organizations and human service organizations with pet programs during disasters. But you can donate time and supplies to your local shelter/s all year long, and especially when disaster strikes.

Hurricanes Milton and Helene Disaster Response Update - 10/09/2024

As Hurricane Milton approaches, we expect disaster response needs will grow in the coming weeks, and we need your help more than ever.

Disaster response fundraising is now active in U.S. PetSmart stores through Sunday, October 13, 2024. You can help by making a donation to PetSmart Charities at your local PetSmart store. Simply ask a store associate about donating to our disaster relief fund at checkout and your donations will go directly to assist those in the impacted areas.

We have granted nearly $300,000 for Hurricane Helene recovery, including over $125,000 in truckloads of pet food to Feeding Tampa Bay and Western North Carolina.

When devastating floods forced them from their home, Brownie (pictured above) and her pet parent faced an impossible choice: find shelter or stay together. Of the few places offering refuge, none allowed pets.

"I just wasn't going to leave Brownie behind," they said. "He's the only family I've got."

Pets are family, too

Sadly, stories like Brownie's are all too familiar. As pet parents, our furry friends hold a special place in our hearts, and their safety and well-being are top priorities. Pets have become such integral family members that 90 percent of pet owners say they would not evacuate if their pets couldn't come with them—yet not all shelters are pet friendly.

That’s why, in 2022, PetSmart Charities and the American Red Cross launched a partnership to support pets as essential family members during times of disaster. Building on that initial $2.25 million commitment, in 2026 PetSmart Charities announced its expanded support with an additional $2.8 million over the next three years. Together, this ongoing collaboration helps the Red Cross meet the needs of people and their pets affected by disasters big and small across the U.S. This partnership remains the first of its kind between two nonprofits—the largest funder of animal welfare and the nation’s largest disaster relief organization.

Helping pets by helping their people

Fortunately, Brownie and her owner finally came across the help they needed. They found refuge together at a Red Cross shelter with a pet-friendly policy.

PetSmart Charities' continued investment in the Red Cross helps ensure that pets are included in disaster planning, response, and recovery to keep pets and people together during times of crisis. Since pets are part of the family, the Red Cross began efforts to identify specific disaster shelters across the country for those accompanied by pets. With PetSmart Charities’ support, these efforts reached new heights by combining our animal welfare expertise with Red Cross disaster response resources, helping the organization launch a new feature in its Emergency App that allows pet parents to locate pet-friendly shelters during disasters.

In the wake of the California wildfires in January 2025, the Red Cross sheltered pets and their humans at the Westwood Recreation Center.

The Checklist: Evacuating with Your Pet

A well-thought-out plan that includes your furry companion is critical. Here is a checklist to help you prepare for and navigate the process of evacuating with your pet.

Identification and Documentation:

Update your pet's identification tags
Have recent photographs of you with your pet to assist with identification.
Keep a copy of your pet's medical records, vaccinations, and essential medications in a waterproof container and have them available electronically.

Emergency Supplies:

Enough food and water for at least five days
Bowls and a can opener (if needed for canned food)
Medications and first aid supplies.
A leash, harness, or carrier to transport your pet.
Comfort items to reduce stress.
Sanitation needs such as pet litter and litter box, paper towels and waste bags

Temporary Shelter:

Download the American Red Cross Emergency App to help you find pet-friendly shelters and resources during a disaster, and to receive real-time alerts for your area. Use this link or text “GETEMERGENCY” to 90999 to download.
Identify pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, animal shelters, or veterinary clinics for temporary housing options.
Reach out to friends or family members who may be willing to provide a safe haven for your pet.

Transportation:

Plan how you will transport your pet during an evacuation.
Ensure your vehicle has necessary supplies such as pet carriers, restraints, and blankets.
If you plan to use public transportation, research pet policies and restrictions beforehand.

Emergency Contacts:

Compile a list that includes your veterinarian, local animal shelters, and pet-friendly accommodations.
Share this information with a trusted friend or family member who can assist during an emergency.

Practice and Preparation:

Practice evacuating with your pet, using different routes and methods of transportation.
Familiarize your pet with its carrier or leash to reduce anxiety during stressful situations.
Keep your pet's emergency supplies accessible and well-stocked.

Creating comfort for people and pets

The Red Cross responds to more than 60,000 disasters across the country every year, giving people comfort and hope during the worst days of their lives. As large disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires increase in frequency and intensity, it's more important than ever to include pets as family members in relief efforts to prevent an increase in displaced populations who need support.

For families of pets like Romeo (shown below), disaster relief inclusion made a world of difference. Their owner sought shelter with the Red Cross after Hurricane Beryl knocked trees into both her Freeport, Texas house and her car. She and her dog, Romeo, walked 14 hours back to her hometown. After spending the night at the post office, she saw a flier about a pet-friendly Red Cross shelter.

With continued support from PetSmart Charities, including a new $2.8 million commitment over the next three years, the partnership with the Red Cross is helping more pet parents access critical resources and information during challenging times.
