PHOENIX (June 9, 2026) – To help more people and their pets when disaster strikes, PetSmart Charities^® has renewed its support of the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program with a three year, $2.8 million grant.

Access to pet-inclusive disaster resources can be the deciding factor in whether families seek shelter that can keep every family member safe — including pets. In fact, 90% of pet parents share they wouldn't leave their home during a disaster if they couldn't bring their pets with them. The new grant funding will help the Red Cross better support people with pets before, during and after disasters both big and small. This builds on an initial commitment that helped integrate pets into emergency response efforts, including adding pet-friendly shelter designation to the Red Cross Emergency App.

June is National Pet Preparedness Month, and pet parents are encouraged to plan for emergencies using the PetSmart Charities pet preparedness checklist, and by downloading the Red Cross Emergency App to receive real-time emergency alerts and identify pet-friendly shelters hosted by the Red Cross. Pet parents can download the app by texting “GETEMERGENCY” to 90999.

“For millions of families, leaving their pets behind isn't an option,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “No one should ever have to choose between their own safety and their beloved pets during a disaster. Over the last three years, we’ve seen what can happen when we work together to keep families together and safe, including more than 14,000 overnight pet stays in shelters hosted by Red Cross. Additionally, we helped Red Cross train 14 pet liaisons across the country who are ready to deploy and support shelters during disasters to help pets and people reunite, rehabilitate and recover.”

Renewed Partnership Focus Areas:
The partnership and grant funding will support five key areas designed to make disaster response more pet-inclusive nationwide to ensure more families stay together when needed most:

Disaster sheltering and pet supplies: Funding will help provide pet supplies to Red Cross run shelters as quickly as possible following a disaster to support accommodating pets, and provide pet comfort kits to allow for quick access to pet supplies like a slip lead, food and water bowls and an enrichment/de-stress toy or activity in the wake of an evacuation or disaster.
Disaster financial services: Through the Red Cross RC Care case management system, funding may help families with pet-related expenses while in shelters, hotels, temporary housing or when transitioning to more permanent housing.
Pet preparedness education: The partnership will help educate the public on preparing for disasters with pets and locating pet-friendly shelters through the Red Cross Emergency App.
Staffing, disaster training and readiness: Funding will help embed pet-inclusive planning across Red Cross disaster operations, including training, disaster content development and collaboration across sheltering, resident transition, external relations and other disaster response functions.
Updating disaster platforms: The grant will support improvements to Red Cross disaster data systems, including adding pet shelter designations to the Red Cross website enhancing pet-related data collection and analytics, and improving system integrations across Red Cross disaster platforms.

PHOENIX (May 5, 2026) – 50 million pets across the U.S. lack access to the veterinary care they need. In 2023, PetSmart Charities® responded with a commitment of more than $100 million over five years to help dismantle the barriers standing between pets and the care they deserve. Today, PetSmart Charities is reporting meaningful progress on that commitment, celebrating the impact to date and calling on stakeholders across the veterinary space to help carry it forward.

Over the last three years, PetSmart Charities has deployed $61 million to support a national portfolio of solutions across three interconnected pillars: expanding affordable care delivery, driving affordability research and innovation, and elevating education and training for the next generation of veterinarians. This work is designed as a coordinated effort to strengthen the veterinary care system.

Expanding Affordable Care: The Accelerator Grant Program Spotlight
To expand access to affordable care, PetSmart Charities’ Accelerator Grant program represents a key investment in expanding access to veterinary care at the community level.
Through Accelerator Grants, PetSmart Charities has supported 51 low-cost, nonprofit veterinary clinics, providing multi-year resources to expand services, increase capacity and reach more pets and families. These clinics are one example of how the organization is investing in scalable, community-based solutions that can be studied, refined, and replicated across the country. The program focuses on helping clinics sustain access over time, not just increasing the short-term capacity.

Since January 2023, local animal welfare partners have received $31.9 million in grant funding to expand clinics, making care more affordable and improving access to locations and appointments. More than 819,000 pets have been served at significantly reduced costs compared to traditional veterinary settings.

“The experience of being a PetSmart Charities Accelerator grantee has been a huge game changer for my organization,” said Lauren Brinkman, executive director at Underdog Pet Rescue and Vet Services. “It’s helped us learn tried and true methods to grow the most effectively so we can help more people and pets. The funding is amazing, but honestly, the best part has been the strategy and support from both fellow grantees and the team at PetSmart Charities. We’re beyond grateful.”

Together with other grant making efforts across the portfolio, these investments are helping to build a more accessible and resilient veterinary care system.

Driving Affordability Research & Innovation
To understand the depth of the access-to-care crisis and to inform strategies and recommendations on how to solve key issues revealed, PetSmart Charities partnered with Gallup on the State of Pet Care Study: Veterinarian Perspectives on American Veterinary Care, the second phase of a multi-year national research initiative. The findings underscore both the urgency of the problem and the opportunity for change.

“Our research found that 94% of veterinarians say clients’ financial constraints sometimes or often limit their ability to provide recommended care,” said Dr. Robyn Jaynes, PetSmart Charities director of veterinary affairs. “Cost is cited as the reason pet parents decline treatment more than twice as often as any other factor. These numbers reflect real families making painful decisions every day, and they reinforce why this work matters.”

These insights led PetSmart Charities to fund a payment plan pilot aimed at reducing financial barriers at the point of care, exploring the potential of flexible payment options to benefit not only pet families but veterinary practices, too.

Equipping the Next Generation Through Education & Training
Expanding access to care requires not only more clinics, but more veterinarians that are trained and committed to working in them. This spring, PetSmart Charities is launching the PetSmart Charities Community Medicine Fellowship Program, a first-of-its-kind initiative in partnership with five leading veterinary universities.

The fellowship aims to directly address a gap identified in the State of Pet Care Study: nearly half of veterinarians (48%) say their education did not prepare them at all to discuss financial barriers with clients, and another 32% say they received only minimal preparation. The fellowship embeds financial communication and community-care training into veterinary education from the start.

Bell brings nearly two decades of PetSmart multi-unit retail leadership experience to the role at the nonprofit, where he will drive strategies that expand PetSmart’s in-store adoption programs, strengthen collaboration between corporate, field and store teams, and deepen engagement with local animal welfare organizations.

“Patrick brings both operational expertise and genuine passion for this mission,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “His people-first leadership style and commitment to building high-performing teams will be instrumental in deepening the connection between our stores, field leaders and partners — helping even more adoptable pets find homes.”

Bell’s animal welfare experience was shaped by engaging both local shelter leadership and driving and in-store adoption success. As a board member for a local nonprofit animal welfare organization, he championed lower-barrier adoption practices, strengthened collaboration across local shelter organizations, and created community-centered events that raised awareness and increased store traffic.

A lifelong learner, Bell leveraged PetSmart’s tuition reimbursement program—earning his Bachelor’s, Dual Master’s, and Doctorate degrees while juggling professional roles. He completed a Doctorate in Business Administration with a concentration in organizational leadership and development and focus on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the pet industry, directly informing how he thinks about PetSmart’s mission and business working better together.

“I fully believe when teams feel connected to purpose, everyone wins—pets, people, partners, and the communities PetSmart serves. PHOENIX (March 23, 2026) — Ahead of its annual National Adoption Week, PetSmart Charities® has awarded $3 million in grants to community animal welfare organizations nationwide to support in-store adoption programs that help animals find loving homes. From March 23–29, 2026, local animal shelters will bring adoptable pets—including dogs, cats, rabbits, and small animals of all ages and personalities—to PetSmart stores across the country to connect people and pets.

Over the last five years, shelters have continued to experience overcrowding as dogs continue to remain longer at shelters – according to the 2025 Hill's Pet Nutrition State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report. Large dogs are especially in need of loving homes.

As local shelters cope with the demand, funding from PetSmart Charities supports the needs of adoptable pets including veterinary care, enrichment and nutrition, to ensure they’re ready for placement in loving homes. Adopting a new best friend at an in-store event can save lives, bring more joy to families and ease the burden of local animal shelters working to give every pet the love and attention they need to thrive.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 20, 2026 — Most veterinarians (94%) say clients’ financial considerations sometimes (56%) or often (38%) limit their ability to provide recommended care, according to the PetSmart Charities-Gallup State of Pet Care Study: Veterinarians’ Perspective on American Veterinary Care, launched today. According to the new study, part two in a series, cost is cited as a reason pet parents decline treatment more than twice as often as any other factor, mirroring the prior results from pet parents, who also indicate financial concerns are the most common reasons they decline care.

Financial Care Discussions Marked by Disconnect in Perception

The new research reveals a stark gap in perception between veterinarians and pet parents: 81% of veterinarians say they often or always recommend an alternative treatment plan when care is declined due to cost. However, prior data revealed 73% of pet parents who declined care due to affordability reported they were not offered a more financially accessible option by their veterinarian. Similarly, while 41% of veterinarians say they often (22%) or always (19%) provide financing or payment plan options to clients struggling with cost, just 23% of pet parents report ever being offered such a plan.

Limited Training to Navigate Financial Conversations

Despite the prevalence of affordability concerns, many veterinarians say they received little or no formal training on how to discuss financial barriers with clients. Nearly half (48%) say their education did not prepare them at all to have these conversations, and another 32% say they were only minimally prepared.

“After listening to pet parents, it was essential that we also hear directly from veterinarians,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “They, too, experience the emotional toll when financial barriers stand between pets and recommended care. These findings highlight the need for upfront, more compassionate conversations about care between veterinarians and the families they serve. When we work together to address these challenges, more pets can access the veterinary care that keeps them healthy and at home with the families who love them.”

Emotional Strain for Providers and Pet Families

Veterinarians report that clients’ inability to afford treatment often has profound emotional consequences for both pet families and veterinary teams. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of veterinarians agree it is difficult to watch clients struggle with costs, and 74% agree that euthanizing a pet for financial reasons is one of the hardest aspects of their job. Forty-one percent report that this outcome, euthanasia due to unaffordable treatment, occurs at least sometimes in their practice.

When care is declined, veterinarians most frequently worry about the pet’s health deteriorating (98%), and 88% express concern for the emotional toll on the pet’s family.

Spectrum of Care Offers a Partial Solution

The Spectrum of Care approach that adapts treatment recommendations based on the needs of the patient, the client’s circumstances (which would include financial considerations) and the veterinary team’s capabilities, is familiar to most veterinarians (88%). However, only half (51%) say they often or always apply this framework.

When it comes to addressing costs, 17% of veterinarians say they proactively attempt to understand a client’s financial concerns before making treatment recommendations, compared with 49% who do so afterward and 34% who address costs only if a client raises the issue.

“Veterinarians enter this field because they care deeply about the welfare of animals,” said Dr. Robyn Jaynes, director of veterinary affairs at PetSmart Charities. “They too are impacted by the rising costs of delivering care on their businesses and their own mental wellness. We’re grateful to those who contributed to this study. Their insights and engagement are critical in evolving affordable solutions that meet the needs of pet parents and for veterinarians and their teams.”

Addressing these issues requires increasing comfort with practicing Spectrum of Care and fostering collaboration across the veterinary system to expand education and resources. In doing so, a future can be built where pets have access to care, families have choices, and veterinary professionals are supported to provide lasting, compassionate service. Methodology

Results for the PetSmart Charities-Gallup State of Pet Care: Veterinarian Perspectives on American Veterinary Care study are based on a web-based survey conducted with 933 practicing veterinarians in the U.S. Gallup conducted the survey between September 9 and October 5, 2025. Respondents were sourced from an opt-in, professional panel of U.S.-based veterinarians and referrals from the PetSmart Charities network to reach as broad of a sample of veterinarians as possible.

For results based on the total sample of the study, the credibility interval is ±3.3 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. Since this sample is not weighted, the credibility interval assumes the sample is equivalent to a simple random sample. Credibility intervals for subgroups are larger. Question wording, practical difficulties in conducting surveys, and the method of obtaining this sample of veterinarians can introduce error or bias into the findings.

Millions of Pets Are Still in Need of Loving Homes

According to the 2025 Hill's Pet Nutrition State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report, 5.8 million animals entered shelters in 2024, which marks the fifth consecutive year shelters are experiencing more intakes than pet placements, resulting in higher shelter populations.

The report also noted that local animal shelters across the U.S. are currently experiencing unprecedented overcrowding due to prolonged stays in shelters – with length of stay increasing for dogs at higher rates. Adopting a pet from a PetSmart Charities adoption partner during National Adoption Week doesn’t just grow families, it helps save pet lives and supports local animal shelters.

Helping Over 11 Million Pets Find Their Families

For 30 years, PetSmart Charities has facilitated in-store adoptions in partnership with local shelters and rescue partners to bring adoptable pets into PetSmart stores to meet potential pet parents. The program has successfully helped over 11 million pets get adopted.

Expanding on these efforts, PetSmart Charities is opening another new Everyday Adoption Centers (EAC) in Phoenix, Arizona with space for up to 50 adoptable cats and dogs. These are different from the cat centers located in nearly every PetSmart store and will host an array of adoptable pets, including Daisy, who will be available for adoption at the Phoenix EAC grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2901 W. Agua Fria Fwy.

The PetSmart Charities EACs work with local animal welfare organizations to host adoptable animals in a safe, clean, in-store environment, allowing them to find loving homes during regular store hours – every day. In the last year, PetSmart Charities has opened five EAC’s in PetSmart stores across the country.

During PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week, thousands of local shelters will bring adoptable pets including dogs, cats, kittens and puppies into nearly every PetSmart store across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. PHOENIX (Sept. 30, 2025) — Across the U.S., PetSmart Charities® estimates that 30 million pets are living in homes with people managing food insecurity. For Pet Hunger Awareness Day® (Sept. 30), PetSmart Charities is partnering with Feeding America®, which is currently observing Hunger Action Month®, to distribute pet food at local food distribution events across the country. The events aim to raise awareness about hunger on both ends of the leash and expand access to nutritious food for every family.

According to Feeding America, more than 50 million people turned to food banks for support — more than at any point in the last decade. When people face hunger, their pets can too, and 63% of Feeding America food bank representatives report that their current sources of securing pet food are not sufficient to meet the need they see*.

To address this growing need, pet parents can pick up food for themselves, as well as their cats and dogs at four Pet Hunger Awareness Day events at Feeding America partner food banks, on Sept. 30:

These events are part of PetSmart Charities’ ongoing efforts to address pet hunger, providing quarterly deliveries of pet food to Feeding America partner food banks for distribution to pet parents in communities across the country, year-round.

“As pet parents face food insecurity, those times of uncertainty can lead to many families making heartbreaking decisions — including surrendering beloved pets,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “We want these families to know that they are not alone, and support is available. We are grateful for incredible partnerships with Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America, which help us broaden our reach by supporting efforts to get pet food to families where they turn for help. Working to Support Families and Pets, Together
According to Feeding America, 52% of neighbors report running out of food in the past year before they had money to buy more. To help those families in need, PetSmart Charities began its partnership with Feeding America in 2017 to distribute pet food through partner food banks.

Feeding America is part of a nationwide network of food banks, statewide food bank associations, food pantries and meals programs committed to investing in solutions that deliver food and other resources to those experiencing food insecurity. Since the launch of this meaningful relationship, PetSmart Charities has donated nearly 70 million pounds of pet food to Feeding America for distribution across its network.

Keeping Older Adults and Pets Together in their Homes
Caring for pets can have profound mental and physical health benefits for many older adults, reporting improved well-being and decreased loneliness. However, many senior pet owners find themselves making tough decisions to care for their pets. Meals on Wheels America found that more than 1 in 5 clients reported going without food themselves just to feed their pets.

As part of their ongoing partnership, PetSmart Charities and Meals on Wheels America reached a milestone of 15 million pet meals delivered to seniors and their furry companions across the country.

This month’s adoption event culminates during peak “kitten season,” during which the majority of kittens are born in the warmer summer months. This surge of vulnerable kittens and cats can flood shelters in need of 24-hour care, feeding, fostering and finding loving homes.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition 2025 Pet Study reveal half of Americans are cat parents

Cats are continuing to see a surge in popularity as over 50% of American pet owners now own a cat, according to the Hill's 2025 State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report. The study also found that the rising trend in cat ownership is largely in part because of cats' self-sufficient nature (62%).

With 40% of Americans also reporting that they would likely adopt a cat in the future, Hill’s is once again supporting PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week events, providing Hill's Science Diet pet food to all the Adoption Centers in PetSmart stores across the U.S. These partnerships closely align with Hill's 23-year mission to support animal welfare through Hill's Food, Shelter & Love program, which provides science-led nutrition to more than 1,000 shelters across North America. Over half (52%) of U.S. pet parents have either skipped or declined necessary veterinary care for their pets, according to a new study that explored pet parents’ perspective on care. Launched today, the PetSmart Charities-Gallup State of Pet Care Study: Pet Parents’ Assessment of American Veterinary Care found that among pet parents who have declined care, seven in 10 cite not being able to afford it, or that the recommended care was not worth the cost.

Conducted by PetSmart Charities and Gallup, this first-of-its kind research aimed to quantify the needs of pet parents. The study will offer a collective voice and serve as a baseline to monitor change. This research also kicks off a series of studies, which will include the voice of veterinarians early next year. Key highlights from this initial study include:

Veterinary Care Costs Are A Concern for Pet Parents

Across Income Levels Citing financial barriers as a reason to forgo or decline veterinary care affects pet parents across many income levels, though the nature of the concern varies. Those in households earning under $60,000 are most likely to avoid care due to affordability, while higher earners are more likely to decline services they do not believe justify the cost. However, even among pet parents making $90,000 or more, a third have skipped veterinary care because they could not afford it.

Pet Parents Say Skipping Veterinary Care Can Have Serious Health Consequences for Pets

The study also found that 14% of pet parents who skipped care say their pet’s condition worsened or their pet died as a result. Additionally, nearly one in three pet parents (30%) report knowing a friend or family member who lost a pet because they could not afford necessary care.

“At PetSmart Charities, we believe that every family should be able to benefit from the love of pets — and that all pets should have access to adequate veterinary care,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities. “This study reinforces what we’re seeing across the industry, that the rising cost of veterinary care is forcing loving pet parents to make devastating choices between financial stability and the wellbeing of their pets. This is a pet healthcare crisis that requires urgent attention.”

Care Alternatives are Rare but Needed

Seventy-three percent of those who declined care due to cost say their veterinarian did not offer a more affordable treatment option. Payment plans, which could ease financial burdens, are also underutilized— with less than one in four pet parents (23%) recalling ever being offered one as an option.

About four in 10 pet parents who have ever taken their pet to the veterinarian say, if the additional care options were available to them, they would turn to community clinics (38%), home visits from a veterinarian (38%), or telemedicine (37%) to help receive care for their pets.

“The data shows that many pet parents are not being presented with alternative care options that could make veterinary services more accessible, despite interest in such options," said Zach Hrynowski, a senior researcher at Gallup. "Our analysis of the data points to a clear opportunity for the veterinary industry to expand affordable, flexible solutions that meet pet parents’ needs.”

Addressing the Challenges

The scope of the problem is vast and will require collaboration from multiple stakeholders. PetSmart Charities has taken the lead by committing more than $100 million to improve access to veterinary care by funding solutions, including:

Providing grant funding to help expand affordable veterinary care clinics that will serve more pets and their people.
Supporting research to help expand the availability of financially friendly payment options.
Examining single service models that may help increase efficiencies and lower costs for pet parents.
Increasing available data and research to shed light on challenges facing pet parents and veterinarians.

“We estimate the cost to ensure adequate care for all pets currently going without it is over $20 billion annually using traditional care delivery models,” added Gilbreath. “Systematic solutions to this crisis go well beyond what one organization can provide – we need a united front from veterinary industry leaders, schools, practices and nonprofit animal welfare leaders to produce sustainable change.”

Methodology

Results for the PetSmart Charities-Gallup State of Pet Care Study: Pet Parents’ Assessment of American Veterinary Care are based on a combined web- and mail-based survey conducted with 2,498 dog and cat parents in the United States. Gallup surveyed 2,307 U.S. adults who indicated they currently had at least one dog or cat via a web-based survey Nov. 13-20, 2024. Gallup also surveyed an additional 191 dog and cat parents via a mail-based survey Dec. 2, 2024-Jan. 9, 2025 to reach pet parents who may not have access to the internet.

Gallup weighted the obtained sample to match national demographics of gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education and region for the population of U.S. dog and cat parents. The margin of sampling error is ±2.6 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
